“Sharpen the Saw” is habit 7 in Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People. This habit of self-renewal is the habit of attending to your physical, social/emotional, mental and spiritual needs.
For most of the past 9 years, I have set aside time to attend the Washington ACDA Summer Institute in July, and found it to be an important part of my own self-renewal. The sessions of the summer institute prod me to think about my practice as a choir director. The many octavos provided in the reading sessions stimulate the imagination for programming. The round table lunch and salmon dinner foster an opportunity to connect with others in positive, encouraging conversations.
University of Puget Sound is a beautifully tended campus where evening walks are relaxing and allow one to take time to reflect – something that seems so difficult to do during the pace of everyday life. Lively conversations in the dorms provide further opportunity to develop relationships with colleagues from around the state.
I hope you will consider the 2016 Summer Institute as part of your personal and professional self-care. Rollo Dilworth is the headliner, July 20-22, 2016 at the University Of Puget Sound Tacoma, WA. Register for the conference here.
